Young Men: “Do It Now”

In his talk “Do It Now” Elder Donald L Hallstrom speaks to the men of the church at the Priesthood session. He opens with the story of his son, who procrastinated a school assignment and as a result did not have a family recipe to turn in for the class cookbook. He ended up turning in a friend’s recipe that used a lot of alcohol. The family suffered embarrassment from the incident.

Elder Hallstrom goes on to make the comparison to those of us who may be procrastinating committing completely to the gospel. He speaks of the importance of reading the scriptures and applying the teachings to our daily lives. He mentions that we might not be doing this because we are lazy, afraid or that we may lack faith.

Elder Hallstrom speaks of our attitudes when we go to church. He stresses the importance of striving to apply what we learn to our daily lives. He warns against going with a closed heart, because we have already heard the teachings.

Elder Hallstrom shares a story about when he was a young boy and he was neglecting to do his chores. His father drew him aside one day and showed him a picture of a sloth. He then read him the scripture that wards against being slothful. Elder Hallstrom explains that this image really helped him to apply the scripture to his life.

Elder Hallstrom refers to President Spencer W. Kimball’s quote of “Do It” and urges each of us to go ahead in improving and repenting. Elder Hallstrom speaks of the importance of repenting before it is too late. He ends his talk by telling us that now is the time to repent and live righteously. He reaches out specifically to the less active and other members who may need to more fully commit themselves to the gospel.

This talk really emphasizes the need to work each day on drawing closer to the Lord. It is important to bring our lives in line with what God wants for us. I hope that you will take the time to read this talk.
