Often we hear talks about the importance of dressing modestly. In fact a recent Sacrament meeting was devoted entirely to the importance of modest dress. Often when we hear these talks we think of the young women. However the principle behind modesty, which is showing respect to ourselves and others can also be extended to the young men.
First it is important to realize that the clothing that people wear makes a statement about the person. This is one of the reasons for the dress codes at BYU and other church schools. The image that you project to those around you will affect how they think about you and the things that you represent. Young men can leave the same impression as the young women can. It is important to choose clothes that are reflective of the values that you have.
Second appropriate church dress is particularly important for young men. In order to participate in helping with the Sacrament each week, the young men need to be dressed appropriately. This means a white button down dress shirt, a tie and pants. It is important that these items be clean and neatly pressed. You can encourage your young man to iron his clothes himself, and you can make it easier by purchasing items that are wrinkle resistant. If you have a family full of boys this extra money is well worth the investment.
If you have a difficult time in purchasing dress clothes for your children, look at dress shops or speak to your Relief Society president. She may know of families who have clothes that they are willing to pass on, since their young men have grown out of them. Talk to your boys about tucking their shirts in and wearing a belt if they need it. As you teach your sons to respect the sacred ordinance of the Sacrament, and the important role they pay in passing it to the congregation, they will take their dress more seriously.
