Young Men: “Give Heed Unto the Prophet’s Words”

In his talk “Give Heed Unto the Prophet’s Words” Elder Quentin L. Cook speaks to the priesthood session of conference. He opens his talk by sharing an account of how the firefighters fought the fires in Southern California last year. These brave men and women stood strong in the face of fast advancing flames, saving both lives and property. He points out that each of us will face times of crisis and danger, but that we need to respond appropriately. He points out that heeding the words of the prophets is one of the most important things we can do.

Elder Cook shares the story of the rescue of the Willie and Martin handcart company. His great-grandfather, David Patten Kimball, was one of the men who carried the pioneers across the river. As Elder Cook talked to his grandfather about it, his grandfather told him that David had been simply following the instructions of President Brigham Young to rescue those pioneers no matter what the circumstances. His grandfather said the real lesson was to follow the prophet.

Elder Cook tells the story of Naaman who was struck with leprosy nearly ignored the counsel of the prophet, because it was too simple and easy. He was convinced to follow it by his servants. As a result he was healed of his affliction. Elder Cook says that many young men want to do something heroic, but fail to realize that staying worthy to serve their missions is just as important as any heroic act that they may do.

Elder Cook shares that each prophet has shared a special message, and holds a dear place in our hearts. However, it is easy to make room to accept and love a new prophet. He bears witness of how President Monson has been prepared to serve as prophet for our time. He then bears witness of President Monson being called of God to lead our church.

This is a wonderful talk. It is important that we each follow the counsel of our prophet. I know that I have been blessed when I have followed the guidance of the prophet. President Monson has been prepared to lead our church at this time. I hope you will take the time to read this talk.
