If you have a Boy Scout who is pursuing the course to achieving Eagle Scout, it can be a long road. Eagle Scout is a rank of distinction and it requires a lot of work by the boy who achieves it. There are several requirements that each scout must make before he can achieve Eagle Scout.
1) Your son will need to complete the merit badge requirements for Eagle Scout rank. There are twelve required badges that each boy will need to complete. In addition to those twelve he needs to complete enough badges to receive twenty-one total badges. Some of the badges take several months to earn so it is important to begin working on these as soon as your son begins Boy Scouts.
2) As your son moves up in rank, there is a requirement of how long he needs to be at each rank before he moves up. Before being considered for Eagle Scout, your son will need to be a Life Scout for six months. During this time your son should also be serving in one of the leadership positions for the boys in Scouts.
3) Your son will need to complete an Eagle service project. The steps to completing this project are extensive. Your son will need to plan out his project and then submit for review by his scoutmaster as well as the District Council. He will then need to execute the project, which should involve coordinating the efforts of several volunteers. After completing the project he will need to complete a booklet which demonstrates how he carried out the project. The project will then be reviewed again by the district council.
4) The final step to receiving Eagle Scout is the Eagle board of review. This is similar to the board of reviews, which your scout has completed as he has moved up the ranks. The biggest difference is that District Council members conduct the board of review for Eagle. The board of review will include the review of the Eagle project as well as questions regarding Boy Scouts and your son’s experience.
It is important to begin to work towards Eagle from the time your son first enters Boy Scouts. It is a long process because of the time requirements to be in each rank.
