Young Men: Winter Scout Activities

Depending on the winter weather in your area, scouts may seem to take a back burner in the winter months. It seems that during the winter that every Wednesday night is simply a time to play basketball. This is not necessary, as there are several badges that can be done entirely indoors. It is also a great time for leaders to focus on requirements for the Duty to God award. Here are five merit badges and Duty to God requirements to consider doing in the winter.

1) One merit badge that would be easy to complete during the winter months is the Cinematography merit badge. This involves learning about the different aspects of cinematography and completing a short video project.

2) The Personal Management merit badge is a required merit badge and is quite time consuming to complete. You may want to begin this badge in the winter months. Many of the individual requirements also coincide with requirements found in the three Duty to God pamphlets.

3) The Family Life merit badge is also required. The requirements are also similar to those that are found in the Duty to God pamphlets. The requirements are easy to complete indoors during bad weather.

4) Another merit badge to consider completing is the Emergency Preparedness badge. The requirements are easy to complete in bad weather. In fact you may use the skills learned when dealing with a bad winter storm.

5) Any of the Citizenship badges can easily be completed in the winter. Many of these requirements also coincide with the requirements found in the Duty to God pamphlets.

With careful planning and a few extra activities you can easily help your boys achieve both Eagle and the Duty to God award. It is important that you continue to utilize the activity nights during the winter months, so that every boy who wants to can achieve these goals.
