In conclusion of the young mothers series based on “Daughters of God” Elder Ballard’s final point for mothers was to pray, study and teach the gospel. When we think about the importance of families in the plan of salvation, we realize the importance that this final counsel really has. It is essential that we take the time to teach the gospel to our children, and that we strengthen our own testimonies.
It is important to regularly study the scriptures and to pray. A mother’s testimony and beliefs will be passed on to her children. If you want your children to have a firm testimony, you should continue to work on your own. I have found that I have an increased sense of purpose, a greater depth of peace and more love for my children when I take time to study the scriptures on a regular basis. I also receive answers to my prayers especially when it comes to my children.
Teaching the gospel can happen every day in every situation you are in. As you spend time with your children talking about their needs and interacting with them, you will find opportunities to bear your testimony and teach gospel principles. It is important to be plugged in to your kids. When you spend time with them be aware of what they are saying and doing.
It is also important to have the more formal teaching of the gospel in family home evening and scripture study. Although it may seem like the struggle to have your kids pay attention is too great, it will pay off. As you hold family prayer and scripture study on a regular basis your children will begin to pay better attention. If you take the time to begin asking comprehension questions when they are little, it can lead into longer deeper discussions when they are older.
As you strive to make the gospel a central part of your life and your family’s life, you will be blessed. A greater sense of peace will come into your home. Your children will be strengthened to meet the many challenges that they will face. A greater sense of closeness will come into your family.
