The third value in the Personal Progress is Individual Worth. The scripture is “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God” (Doctrine and Covenants 18:10). This theme focuses on self-esteem. The girls should learn that Heavenly Father loves each of them and that He is aware of them and their needs.
The experiences focus on learning about how Heavenly Father loves them. They also have the opportunity to realize their talents and gifts. In addition to learning that they are each of worth, the girls learn the importance of helping everyone feel their worth. This is an important lesson and skill to learn especially for teenage girls. The value projects also focus on goal setting and planning.
This is an important value for each girl to learn since it helps her to realize that she has self worth. Teenagers are often uncertain about themselves. They are looking for acceptance and wanting to prove themselves. Realizing that God loves them no matter what is important to help the young women to stay on the gospel path.
When you focus on the value, try to take the time to point the strengths of each girl. You can also work on having a positive and uplifting environment where every girl is accepted and loved. Too often girls will exclude one or two during these critical years. This can be very damaging to a testimony and self-esteem. It is important that you make an effort to stop this from happening.
If you have one or two girls who are especially struggling with fitting in, you may want to plan a few activities that focus on their interests and strengths. It is also important that if someone new moves into your ward that the girls be friendly and get to know her. Church should be one place where you can find love and acceptance.
