Young Women: Integrity

The final value in the Personal Progress book is Integrity. The theme for this value is “I will have the moral courage to make my decisions based on my knowledge of what is right and wrong.” The scripture is Job 27:5: “Till I die I will not have my integrity removed from me.” This is a wonderful value that will help your daughter develop strong and good characters.

The value experiences for integrity really focus on helping the girls to understand what integrity is. There are several spiritual accounts that the girls should read. They are also encouraged to interview women that they respect in order to understand integrity. The girls are then asked to choose areas in their lives where they can focus on living with integrity. These experiences require a lot of self-reflection.

The value projects focus on the girls working on developing their commitment to an activity. They can also plan and carry out an activity that shows integrity or make an item that represents their commitment to integrity. These projects will help the girls really focus on the importance of integrity.

Integrity is such an important value to develop. It really makes a big impact on people when they realize that you live your life with integrity. It is important that we teach integrity to our children. It is also important to live with integrity so that others can recognize the power that the gospel has in our lives. I am grateful for the experiences in my life that helped me to develop integrity.

One experience in particular stands out. I had recently begun my first real job as a bank teller. I was complaining about not balancing (I was two cents off), when one of the tellers reached into her extra coins jar (something which tellers are not supposed to do) and gave me two pennies. An older teller next to me (who was not a member) leaned over and said “My integrity is worth more to me than two pennies.” I had not really thought of my actions as being dishonest, but as she said those words, I knew that she was right. I would not try to cover a twenty dollar or a thousand dollar outage, so why should I cover a two cent outage. This moment really shaped the way I looked at integrity and since then I have really valued my integrity. I do my best to live an honest and truthful life.
