Young Women’s Camp

Summer is quickly approaching. For those of you with young women it means that it is nearly time to send them off to camp. Young Women’s Camp brings back a lot of memories. One summer we had a lake full of leeches and the hike we went on was through brush literally covered with ticks. There were hundreds of ticks on each bush. That year we were also awakened by the pleasant sound of sheep as they were put out to pasture every morning. Ah the memories.

Young Women’s Camp is a wonderful opportunity for your daughter. There are different skills that she will pass of each year that she attends. This includes cooking over a campfire, planning meals, first aid, hiking safety and other skills that everyone should learn at some point in her life. If you are like me, then you gain the added benefit of avoiding these experiences yet another year. Your young women’s leaders will make sure that your girls are safe.

Camps vary from area to area. I have found that most camps that take place outside of Utah tend to rent a campground with cabins and showers. They may even have a pool. Since I grew up inside of Utah, we were afforded no such luxury, and didn’t even have flush toilets every year. Yuck! Even though I am not the camper type, I have fond memories of camp. I learned some great skills and had fun staying up late talking to my friends and leaders.

There is also a spiritual benefit that comes from spending time in nature and away from home. There is always a closing testimony meeting where girls have the opportunity to share their feelings and testimonies with each other. This is a wonderful meeting, and the spirit is always strong there.

You can learn more about what to expect at camp by looking the at the Young Women Camp manual. Do you have any fond memories of Young Women’s Camp?
