Young Women’s: Completing Handicrafts for Value Projects

Many of the value projects include learning a new skill or craft for Young Women’s. A lot of homemaking skills are becoming a lost art and it would be wonderful for your daughter or young women to learn them. A few of the skills that I learned in young women’s included basic cake decorating which gave me the courage to decorate my children’s birthday cakes. I also learned how to complete a counted cross-stitch. This skill has proven beneficial as I made several for people as gifts. I was also able to teach young women the skill as an adult.

If you are interested in teaching young women to do counted cross-stitch, there is a great book available to you. It contains patterns for the Young Women motto and the Young Women theme. The patterns are simple enough for beginners and fairly easy to follow. Since the patterns are simple they work up quickly which will help the young women to feel successful as they complete the skill.

Crocheting is another skill, which is not as common anymore. This can be fairly easy to learn. It would be easy to teach the young women a few basic stitches and then challenge them to complete a baby’s blanket to donate to a local children’s hospital. You can complete the same project with knitting.

If you do not know how to teach these different handicrafts, you can ask other ward members if they know how. Chances are you will find someone who would love to teach you and your daughter how to do these things. It will also give you a chance to build a new friendship as you take the time to learn the skill and get to know the person who is teaching you. Learning these skills could complete the Knowledge value project or the Divine Nature value project.
