The title may strike you funny, but your uterus is nothing short of amazing. Not only does it increase to 1,000 times its original size during pregnancy, it is one of the most multifunctional parts of your body. The smooth muscle is responsible for pushing out your baby, contracting during menstruation and may even contract during orgasm (which is why some woman are advised to abstain during their pregnancy if they are at risk for premature labor).
It’s likely you never thought much about your uterus until you began your period, started trying to conceive or became pregnant. But for your entire life, your uterus has played a pivotal part in multiple aspects of your body’s structure and function. For example, did you know that it supports your bladder, bowel, pelvic bones and other organs? Your uterus holds your bladder above the pubic bone and your bowel behind itself, keeping the two organs separate from each other.
When you are expecting, you uterus provides the perfect home for your baby. Consider the vast amount of technology, resources, medical knowledge, money and staff required to keep a premature infant alive. Those who do survive often face life-long health problems and possible developmental problems. Outside of the mother’s womb, a baby must fight for her life, regardless of how advanced her care is. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s purpose is to simulate the conditions in the womb so that the baby can develop to maturity, but even the best NICU cannot perfectly replicate the environment of the uterus. The complexity of the uterus’ design and function is awe inspiring. Even if a NICU could perfectly replicate the uterine environment, the cost of caring for an infant through its entire gestation would exceed half a million dollars. So, if you carry two babies to term, your uterus is essentially worth more than a million dollars! (That means Michelle Duggar’s is worth almost ten million.)
See? I told you your uterus is amazing!
