Sorry about the break I took from baby there, I didn’t mean to be gone for several days in a row, but if you check out my Fitness blog, I explain what’s going on with me over there. In the meanwhile, let’s talk about the rapid arrival of the holiday season and what we all have going on. From the cooking to the decorating to the shopping and the wrapping and the holiday gatherings, there’s a lot to do for moms and dads and even more to keep track of.
It’s important to remember that whether this is your baby’s first, second or third Christmas, you still have to take precautions with the variety of supplies that you may have laying around. Wrapping paper is very alluring to babies because they love the sound it makes when it crinkles and it tears. They love to bang the wrapping paper rollers around too so be sure that you don’t let any of your other wrapping supplies be left lying around.
Make sure you always put up or away out of reach the:
- Scissors
- Ribbon
- Tape and Tape Dispensers
- Decorations – especially glass and easily broken ones
- Hard candy
Every year during the holidays, parents have to make trips to the emergency room for the baby who swallowed part of an ornament or for choking on hard candy or for bad cuts from scissors. Ribbon is not only an internal choke hazard, it’s an external one too.
When you’re putting up your Christmas tree or any other large decorations, invest in a little play yard to put around the outside of the tree. This lets your little one enjoy the sights to their heart’s content without endangering them. Because no matter how often we tell them no, reaching for the beautiful things on the tree is a hard impulse to control.
Be sure to check and then check again when you have hazardous supplies out whether it’s a hand mixer, a knife, a baking pan or more. Put these things well out of the reach of little fingers and enjoy the holiday season without the trip to the emergency room – it just makes a better holiday all around.
What are you doing for safety precautions this holiday season?
