One of the things out there in blog-land is the practice of link exchanges. These exchanges can drive more traffic to your blog, create a network of online blogging friends, and introduce you to people who share similar interests.
Doing a link exchange is simply. You might have already participated in one or two without realizing it.
Let’s say you have a friend who has a blog. You might add a section to your blog that says “Favorite Links.” Under that section is the name of your friend’s blog with a link to it. Your friend reads your blog and sees that you put a link to her blog. So, she puts a link on her blog that points right back to yours. That is a link exchange.
By doing a link exchange, you are connecting with another blog (or web site). The next time you come across an interesting blog, why not send a message to the author and ask for a link exchange? Visitors essentially get recommendations to other blogs, and that in turn drives traffic and return readers.
There are services out there that will facilitate the link exchanges, so you don’t have to personally e-mail every single person who owns a website. This is the way they work. You join the service and put a piece of code on your website. When you come across another member of the service and link to them, their website automatically posts a reciprocal link. One such services is http://www.bloglinker.com/
Link exchanges should be done responsibly. If you link to many many different blogs without any sort of rhyme or reason, visitors to your blog will be confused. Worse yet, you will be known as a link hog (or other worse names), and other bloggers may think twice before linking to your blog. You’ll gain a reputation of linking to everyone and anyone.
