Memes are a big part of the blogging world today. Chances are, if you read just five or six blogs today, you’ll come across at least one. But what are they? Here is some information about them.
In general, a meme is a sort of blog project. It is usually a list of open-ended questions listed and answered on a blog. The goal is generally to make the blogger think creatively, or to help readers get to know the blogger. Some example of questions that you might find in a meme might be:
What moment made you realize that you were a mom?
What is the very first thing you do in the morning?
If you had to have a bug for a pet, what would it be?
Complete this sentence: I would rather do _____ than sleep.
There is some debate about how the word meme is pronounced. Some people say it as if it rhymes with “dream,” while others pronounce it “mem,” as in memory. And memes may not be called memes in blogs. Most of the time, memes aren’t called memes but have names such as “The Friday Five,” “The Thursday Threesome,” or “Sunday Secrets.”
Memes are considered “viral” to many people because they tend to propagate themselves, that is reproduce over and over, throughout the web. Bloggers copy the lists from other bloggers and replace the answers with their own.
Some bloggers “tag” each other with memes, asking them to do the meme on their own website, thus encouraging the spreading of the meme.
Memes can also mutate a bit across blogs. For example, take the questions seen above. After a few people have added them to their own blogs, the questions may wind up looking like this:
When did you first realize you wanted to be a parent?
Do you always brush your teeth in the morning?
Have you ever swallowed a bug?
Complete this sentence: The celebrity I would most like to dream about is ____________
