As a home improvement and home decor enthusiast myself, I would love to hear about any home improvement or decorating projects that you are currently working on or plan to do in the future. Do you hire someone to do your projects, or are you a do-it-yourself kind of person? What kinds of projects have you done in the past? How did they turn out?
I’ll start by sharing some of mine. One of my first and favorite projects was a small cabinet I made for my main bathroom since there wasn’t a medicine cabinet. I used a drawer that was left over from an old desk. I turned it on its back, using the drawer front as the top of the cabinet. I measured and cut two doors from scraps of plywood that I had from other projects, and attached them with small hinges that cost less than a dollar at the hardware store.
Next, I made a shelf from scrap wood and attached it inside with finishing nails. I sanded everything down and “whitewashed” it. The distressed look I got from the wash of cream-colored paint makes it appear old. That and the handmade quality give it an antique feel.
Later, I made a small bookshelf to match. It stands near the tub and provides extra storage. I made it from the other two drawers that were left from the desk, and it was probably the simplest project I’ve ever done. I screwed the drawers together, end to end, and used the drawer fronts as the base and top. All that was left to do was sand and paint.
Note: The drawers used for these projects were smooth with no hardware. If you can find drawers at a salvage center, or you remove some from an old piece of furniture before getting rid of it, you can simply remove the hardware. Just fill the hole(s) from the hardware with a little bit of wood putty, sand when the putty is dry, and paint.
I can’t wait to hear about your projects!
