Wayne and I’s song is “I Melt With You” by Modern English. We actually heard them in person in 1986. They were performing in concert at the University of Denver.
Vague Memories
I wish I remembered if I actually heard them play the song. I don’t. I vaguely remember us attending the concert. Part of it. That was the night Wayne and I ditched the group we always ran around with to go spend time together, alone, for the very first time. (Before that we were always with our friends doing stuff. That night changed everything. After that we were virtually inseparable and spent all our free time together, just the two of us.)
I also don’t remember how it came to be that this song was the one we picked as our theme song. I’m sure Wayne somehow suggested it or referenced it, but the moment isn’t registering in my memory.
However, I want to say it was because it came on the radio as we were driving away from the concert. Something tells me Wayne laughed about it. Something also tells me I was clueless why he was laughing, and that he had to explain the group playing on the radio was the same group we just left. I can’t verify any of that, though. It’s but a hazy, perhaps invented, recollection.
Significant Strains
I will say that the song has haunted us ever since. But in a good way. It always comes on at the most opportune times.
Such as when we were scoping out a possible venue for our wedding reception. My dad took us to a little restaurant he knew of for dinner, we’d just placed our order, and boom our song started playing. Wayne and I shared a knowing glance.
“Think it’s a sign?” he asked.
I shrugged but also sort of nodded.
After we tasted our meals to confirm the deliciousness, we told my dad to book the place. We loved the ambiance, the food was great, and the song cinched it.
That was a happy time. Last week, as we were en route to the hospice to gather my mom’s belongings, our song suddenly stated playing. What made it more significant was the time: 7:14 a.m.
Important Numbers
See, those numbers also mean a lot to Wayne and I, because his birthday is on the seventh, mine’s on the fourteenth. Both in September. One week apart exactly.
Those numbers show up everywhere. We never know when, we never know why, but they always seem to be a harbinger of good luck, comfort, or peace.
In this case, it brought us peace. We held hands, sang aloud to our song, cried, and let the world stop for a second as we melted together.
