Zico Coconut Water: Chocolate Flavored Water?

Chocolate flavored water? I’ve heard of putting lemons or lime in water but I had not heard of putting a Hershey bar in water before. When I agreed to taste test Zico Coconut water I did not agree to chocolate. Who ever heard of the water and chocolate aside from the movie Water for Chocolate? However, if drinking a bottle of Zico Coconut Chocolate water came anything close to that movie then it would be worth a taste, right? So, I just knew it would be one of the worst things I ever tasted. Wait, I did have bad fish one time at a little quaint restaurant one night, even chocolate water couldn’t be that bad.

When I opened a box to reveal a bottle of chocolate flavored water my eyes grew big with wonder and cynicism. My five year old began to jump up and down with excitement and begged me to pour her a glass. “Oh good”, I thought to myself, “an unsuspecting tester.” I am no stranger to chocolate being a popular ingredient in many weight loss, protein supplement and health products. Most of the time you get some chocolate flavoring that is muted or harsh or somewhat gross.

So what’s the punch line?

I allowed my daughter to taste it just knowing she would spit it out. She didn’t. I allowed my 2 year old to taste it just knowing her little taste buds would reject it. She asked for more. Moving on to my son, he decided it was like super thin chocolate milk. Well, they are just children, right? What about a teen? I have one. Anything to delay my turn in tasting this brown colored water and yes it is brown in color. It is not brown as in unappetizing. It actually looks like super skinny skim chocolate milk. My teen dislikes chocolate to begin with and did not like it but she also did not think it was gross. Believe it or not, that is not as negative as it sounds. So, it was finally my turn. I still thought I would hate it. I figured it would have some weird aftertaste or strange chalky cocoa taste. So…here’s the punch line, are you ready? It really did taste like super skinny skim chocolate milk. I find the actual chocolate taste quite amazing. The best chocolate taste so far in a low calorie or low fat option. However, that certainly has something to do with the all natural ingredients. If you have a sweet tooth or a love of chocolate you may just find this a nice craving tamer.

What’s the skinny?

Zico chocolate is low in calories and sugar. In a 14 ounce bottle there is only 110 calories. It contains less sugar than some of the fruit flavored waters and contains only natural ingredients. Now, you really get may vote on the natural ingredients alone. The water contains coconut water, coconut cream, cocoa, vanilla, and carragreenan.

I read a review on the Zico website from BevNet.com which said it to be “very unique, and, well, addictive.”

I can see myself in need of something sweet and chocolaty and turning to Zico to keep me on track while satisfying a craving and only reaping the positive benefits of chocolate and not the negative. Yet, I cannot say I am a fan of chocolate water. The combination is still a bit strange to me. I find myself tasting the “chocolate milk” flavor and wanting the substance that chocolate milk brings. If you are in the market for a super skinny no dairy chocolate drink you have found it in Zico Chocolate. This is the kind of drink that either you will love or only be able to appreciate the unique quality but never really drink it again. Try it to find out which camp you fall into, I promise you it is one of those things that is worth a try.

Disclosure: Zico Chocolate water provided by the company to taste test. My opinions may or may not reflect that of the company as they do NOT say this is “super skinny skim chocolate milk”, but then again maybe that is because I am not part of their marketing team. Wonder if I should submit a resume?
